2001 Awards Ceremony

The awards ceremony took place at a luncheon held on December 10, 2001 at the New York Public Library, symbolizing the great importance Mr. Carnegie placed on libraries. Along with members of the 21 Carnegie institutions' boards and staff, leaders from New York's cultural, philanthropic and political worlds attended. The inaugural awards were presented by national and international leaders who understand how modern philanthropy has influenced democratic institutions of learning and exploration.

The recipients of the medal and their presenters were:

CNN's Senior Anchor Judy Woodruff, a trustee of Carnegie Corporation of New York, served as the master of ceremonies.

The awards ceremony was the high point of the day-long centennial celebration, during which leaders of Carnegie institutions worldwide held a first-ever joint board meeting aimed at revitalizing their missions prior to jointly awarding the Carnegie medals and bronze bust of Andrew Carnegie to the seven laureates.
